Acoustics expert elected to key role at trade body

An expert in acoustics consultancy, particularly in railways and monitoring, has been elected to a key role at a national trade association.

Paul Shields will serve as Chair of the Association of Noise Consultants (ANC) for the next two years.

With 30 years’ experience in acoustics consultancy and research, Paul leads a team of 50 staff at AECOM, providing consultancy services on a broad range of topics associated with acoustics and vibration.

Paul has represented AECOM at the ANC for many years, serving as an ANC Board member for the last four years, initially as Honorary Secretary and then as Vice Chair.

As a Board member, Paul has worked to raise the ANC’s profile and build closer ties with other organisations, including the Noise Abatement Society.

He has also helped with the review of several association publications and the organisation of the annual conference. As well as his involvement with the ANC Futures Committee, Paul is also a member of the trailblazer group for the Acoustic Technician apprenticeship.

Paul said: “My focus will be on supporting the ANC in continuing its excellent work and helping our members through the many challenges they face as a result of the pandemic.

“I’m passionate about continuous professional development, diversity and inclusion, so I’ll be actively promoting opportunities for people to achieve their potential, regardless of their background or circumstances.

“I’m also keen to see acousticians improve the ways they communicate technical information and will be championing report writing that’s easy for our clients and stakeholders to understand.”

The ANC is the voice of professional consultancy in acoustics, noise and vibration, representing 110 member companies that employ more than 1,000 people.

Its purpose is to highlight how ANC members lead the way to improve acoustics for the whole of society – and to promote high standards and good practice in the industry.

Paul was elected at the ANC’s recent annual general meeting and takes over from previous Chair, Dan Saunders.

Graham Parry, President of the ANC, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Paul to the role of Chair of the ANC.

“A significant strength of the association is the expertise our Board members bring and their commitment to the industry overall, which Paul has already demonstrated during his work over the last four years.

“I’d like to congratulate him on this appointment – myself and the Board look forward to working even more closely with him over the next two years.”

New guidance launched for acoustics apprenticeship

The trailblazer group behind a pioneering apprenticeship in acoustics has brought together the latest information, to signpost potential employers and candidates to the programme.

Available to view at https://www.association-of-noise-consultants.co.uk/download/faqs-acoustics-technician-apprenticeship/ the information pulls together general insight and guidance on the Acoustics Technician Apprenticeship in a FAQ format.

It includes details of the Apprenticeship Levy, recruitment advice and details of the structure and format of the training programme.

The Acoustics Technician Level 4 Apprenticeship, launched in January 2020, has been developed as an employer-led, industry initiative, with support from the Association of Noise Consultants (ANC) and the Institute of Acoustics (IOA).

Richard Grove, Acoustics Director at BDP, is Chairman of the working group which has developed the apprenticeship.

He said: “We have had a great deal of interest in the programme, and together the trailblazer group has pooled together the answers to the questions we are often most asked, to provide a reference point for those looking at taking on an apprentice, as well as anyone considering it as a career option.

“The new apprenticeship will help deliver the acousticians of the future, which are needed across a range of industries to meet demand.

“It will also bring benefits to the higher education sector, by acting as a feeder for degree courses, either under the apprenticeship route, or as a sponsored degree by a company.

“Currently London South Bank University and Southampton Solent University are interested in providing the apprenticeship.

“It is hoped that as more employers show support for the scheme, other education providers will be able to offer the training for this apprenticeship in the future.”

In the run-up to the official launch of the Acoustics Technician Apprenticeship, the trailblazer group – which includes members of both the ANC and IOA – were presented with the Armstrong Next Generation Award at the John Connell Awards.

Organised by the Noise Abatement Society, the award was made last year for the group’s work in promoting and facilitating entry to the acoustics profession, as the apprenticeship programme started to take shape.

Richard Grove added: “Apprentices will have a clear, defined career path and the programme will offer opportunities for diversity and inclusion within the acoustics industry.”

Site Suitability Indicator (SSI) For New Residential Development

Member company, Noise Consultants Limited has developed a Site Suitability Indicator (SSI) which brings together strategic noise mapping data in England as prepared by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) with the Initial Risk Assessment approach as advocated in ProPG.

Freely available, the SSI aims to help provide noise practitioners, developers and Local Planning Authorities with an initial understanding of the suitability of a site in England for new residential development from a noise perspective. The SSI has been prepared in consultation with Defra, and has been supported by Acustica Limited.
