Case Study – Building Acoustics – Cole Jarman

COMPANY: Cole Jarman

PROJECT: Courtyard Project

SPONSOR:  Acoustic 1

The Courtyard project was a once in a lifetime opportunity to substantially expand the facilities for the world-renowned music conservatoire. The scheme included the introduction of two new performance spaces, a dedicated home to the museum of music, audio recording facilities, additional music practice rooms, and other ancillary accommodation. The project required very careful attention to detail and experience in the acoustic design at every stage.
Very careful architectural coordination was required to ensure adequate volumes for room-acoustic purposes, while enabling sufficient space for services and coordination of passageways. The College shares a party wall boundary with Imperial College (ICL) and in the basement of the ICL School of Mines, which is immediately adjacent to the College’s construction site, ICL housed a number of highly vibration sensitive electron microscopes and other similar equipment.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS:

This development on the last remaining space on the site has significant operational difficulties. A client who understands what they want to achieve in terms of acoustics adds to the challenge as did the neighbouring properties. The judges noted that vibration monitoring also formed part of the work and that aspect might be equally interesting as an award entry. With the site only opening in March 2020, there is understandably little information on its use in practice which would otherwise be helpful supporting detail.
