COMPANY: Miller Goodall
PROJECT: Dalton Square
SPONSOR: ANV Measurement Systems
This is a mixed-use development with a large residential component located directly adjacent to one of Lancaster’s biggest nightclubs. Largely a new build scheme, the project also involves the demolition and partial refurbishment of an old cinema auditorium. The sensitive location of the development, as well as the strict planning requirements for noise, made it a challenging project to deliver.
The existing cinema auditorium is structurally adjoined to the nightclub premises and experiences high levels of low frequency noise internally when the nightclub is operating. The nightclub also has a large open roof terrace which looks onto the proposed site and is used by patrons into the early morning hours. A truly multifaceted approach to achieving the low frequency noise criteria was required, characterised by close collaboration with the architect in developing a range of complementary design solutions.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS:
The judges liked this entry because it is an excellent example of the contribution that acoustic consultants bring to this type of project. It is a great solution for the client and there is good evidence of stakeholder engagement and interactive design with the architects, including the use of a movable partition in studio accommodation to assist with noise management. Whilst following existing best practice, there is clear focus on the synergy with the surrounding environment and working with the client that makes this an excellent example of the value acousticians bring to this type of project.
